Performance Report - Week 3
In this weekly column we’ll take a look at the top performer at each position. The goal isn’t to just analyze the players individually but to identify variables that make up these top performances so we can more accurately project them in the future.
Quarterback – Andrew Luck IND
His Line: 31-39 370 yards 4 TDs, 3-15 rushing, aDOT= 7.2, PFF Grade= 5.0
Andrew Luck put up the type of game that can carry a whole fantasy football team to victory. He threw three touchdowns in a first half as the Colts led 30-0 over the Jags who played worse than I thought was possible. Luck showed the type of precision that made him a number one overall draft pick.
The statistic that stands out here is the low aDOT. 7.2 ranks Luck 21st among quarterbacks from week 3. His 82% completion percentage ranked fourth and he was the only quarterback to score 4 touchdowns on the day. Six out of the top seven quarterbacks from week 3 threw 3 or more touchdowns.
As a fantasy owner it’s important to look for quarterbacks who have the trust of the playcaller in the redzone which leads to more opportunities for passing touchdowns. Luck is definitely maturing into that type of player. One of the criticisms last season of offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton is that he wouldn’t just turn Luck loose. That seems to be changing more and more each week.
