Performance Report - Week 14
In this weekly column we’ll take a look at the top performer at each position. The goal isn’t to just analyze the players individually but to identify variables that make up these top performances so we can more accurately project them in the future.
Quarterback – Cam Newton CAR
His Line: 21-33 226 yards 3 TDs, 83 yards 1 TD rushing, aDOT= 12.0, PFF Grade= 2.9
It’s the walking wounded Performance Report this week and Cam Newton leads the way after his dual threat performance Sunday followed by a Tuesday car wreck. It’s likely he’ll miss week 15 action.
Newton is one of the few quarterbacks in the league right now who can put up big passing numbers and add in those precious rushing points creating tremendous upside. But consistency has been a major problem, just as it seems to be with the dual threat quarterbacks who make this column.
One aspect of this dynamic is that pocket passing quarterbacks are the center of the offense. Quarterbacks that are more dual threat pair better with an offensive scheme that leans more on the running game. This is better for real NFL game planning but a real negative for fantasy football.
I think that’s one of the reasons why we see dual threat quarterbacks put up big numbers some weeks, but struggle to do so consistently. Pocket passers are just safer players.
