IDP Snap Report: Week 14
Now that we have reached the last few weeks of the season, most teams are pretty much set at what they are doing at linebacker. Last week there were two linebackers who came back from injury, two who missed time and could miss more time with an injury, and one benching. If you’re looking for a linebacker for your fantasy playoffs, here are the players to avoid, or the ones to pick up if there is a last minute inactive.
With Dannell Ellerbe out of the lineup, the Ravens have used Jameel McClain on every down like they had before, while Brendon Ayanbadejo, Albert McClain and Josh Bynes took snaps at the other inside linebacker spot. Then McClain went down with an injury during the game, and Bynes started playing every down. This week both Ellerbe and McClain are questionable, but if neither player can play than Bynes will likely play every down during the game. At this point Bynes should only be used if you are counting on Ellerbe or McClain, and then last minute have to switch them out for Bynes. It should also be noted that Ray Lewis practiced last week and may well be called upon this week with the Ravens in a pinch at ILB. He will be back, it is just a question of when.

With James Anderson missing the game, Jason Phillips took over in the Panthers base defense while the other two linebackers continued to play every down. Because the Falcons are a pass happy team and were losing almost the entire game, the Panthers didn’t use much base defense which led to Phillips only having 10 snaps. If Anderson misses another game, then Phillips should see more snaps in the base defense again. If anything this helps Thomas Davis, because occasionally Anderson would take some snaps from Davis in the nickel defense, while this ensures that Davis is likely to see 100% of snaps.
Darryl Sharpton/Bradie James/Tim Dobbins
With all three linebackers healthy, the Texans decided to use Sharpton and James in the base defense, while putting Dobbins in the nickel defense. They did a little bit of mixing and matching during the game, but that was the general rule used. Late in the game during garbage time Barrett Ruud saw a handful of snaps as well. As I said last week, because no one is playing every down and things have been inconsistent week to week, all three of these linebackers should be avoided.
Jacquian Williams/Chase Blackburn/Keith Rivers
After missing the last six games, Williams returned to the Giants lineup and played in 64% of snaps. This took away from Keith Rivers who saw his highest percentage of snaps last week, but was down to 15% this week. It also took away from Chase Blackburn who played in just 63% of snaps. This move basically makes it so all three linebackers are bad plays, leaving Michael Boley as the only every down linebacker left for the Giants.
Jamar Chaney/Akeem Jordan
At outside linebacker, the Eagles have used Akeem Jordan in the base defense for the past several weeks while DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks have been the every down linebackers. However in the past game, Jamar Chaney took over the base defense snaps. While you are hopefully not in a league where you’re dependent on an outside linebacker who just plays in the base defense, in case you are Chaney had a tackle and two assists this past week.
