'Had a Bad Day' Team, Week 14

2013-bad-dayIn an ideal world everyone would play to their best and we’d be left with nothing but praise to give to players.

This isn’t an ideal world.

For whatever reason guys don’t always play well in the National Football League. It may be that they lack talent, that they suffer from inexperience, or they may just be having one of those days. Regardless we’re here to hold them to account whether it be an undrafted free agent starting his first game, or a 10 time All Pro at the peak of his powers.

Let’s see who made the Had a Bad Day Team for Week 14.

(Note: Team will be updated after Monday Night Football games are analyzed and on Wednesday when All-22 footage helps us study plays in even more detail where needed with a * noting a change)

OFFENSE

Quarterback: Mike Glennon, TB (-5.1)

Just when Glennon was looking like he was making progress, the past two weeks have been two giant steps back. Just 36% of passes complete is never good.

Dishonorable Mention: Eli Manning (NYG)

Running Back: Chris Johnson, TEN (-2.5)

Usual woes in the passing game and a fumble thrown in for good measure. This is the player he is now.

Dishonorable Mention: Adrian Peterson (MIN)

Full Back: Anthony Sherman, KC (-1.4)

The Sherminator can take solace with the fact he still leads our fullback rankings on the year, even after this showing.

Dishonorable Mention: Tommy Bohanon (NYJ)

Tight End: Ed Dickson, BAL (-3.4)

Dennis Pitta back catching passing and “blocking” specialist Dickson getting a negative grade with his run blocking. All is right in Baltimore.

Dishonorable Mention: Julius Thomas (DEN)

Wide Receivers: Harry Douglas, ATL (-3.0) and Mike Brown, JAX (-2.1)

A couple of big drops from Douglas and just 20 yards in the air. It had all been going so well for him until this week. Brown caught three balls but two drops of his own won’t have impressed the coaching staff.

Dishonorable Mention: Tiquan Underwood (TB) and Brandon LaFell (CAR)

Tackles: Lamar Holmes, ATL (-3.5) and Ryan Schraeder, ATL (-3.6)

Just what the Packers pass rush needed. Holmes had one of his better outings in pass protection but let himself down in the run game. It was the other way round for Schraeder who saw his most significant action to date replacing Jeremy Trueblood, but with a sack and six hurries he had issues pass blocking.

Dishonorable Mention: Reily Reiff (DET) and Byron Bell (CAR)

Guards: Khalif Barnes, OAK (-5.4) and Kraig Urbik, BUF (-4.8)

Barnes held up in pass protection but was woeful against the run with a horrid -6.9 rating. As for Urbik he just wasn’t up to the task of slowing down Gerald McCoy. He’s not alone in that regard.

Dishonorable Mention: Chris Williams (SL) and Peter Konz (ATL)

Center: Cody Wallace, PIT (-4.2)

A third-string center against the Dolphins dominant defensive line? Yeah that was never going to go well.

Dishonorable Mention: Gino Gradkowski (BAL)

DEFENSE

Each week we put forward a hybrid defense that features two edge rushers (4-3 defensive ends or 3-4 outside linebackers), three players on the “interior” of the defensive line (3-4 defensive ends or defensive tackles and two linebackers (all inside linebackers and 4-3 outside linebackers).

Defensive Interior – Ends: Muhammad Wilkerson, NYJ (-5.3) and Jurrell Casey, TEN (-4.3)

Two fine players who had two bad Sundays. Casey could get nothing going against the Broncos interior that had him off balance all game while Wilkerson was unusually quiet by his high standards.

Dishonorable Mention: Ricardo Mathews (IND) and Nick Fairley (DET)

Defensive Interior – Nose: Barry Cofield, WAS (-2.7)

Cofield was fantastic against the Giants a week ago but as the weather turned as did his performance.

Dishonorable Mention: Aubrayo Franklin (IND)

Edge Rushers: Whitney Mercilus, HST (-4.9) and Corey Wootton, CHI (-5.5)

Cameron Bradfield is the latest in a long line of tackles who have tamed Mercilus who continues to disappoint. Wootton is back at defensive end and it didn't go well, generating nothing as a pass rusher and being pushed about in the run game.

Dishonorable Mention: Derrick Morgan (TEN) and Ahmad Brooks (SF)

Linebackers: Craig Robertson, CLV (-4.6) and Philip Wheeler, MIA (-4.4)

Another week, another poor showing from Robertson who can’t be doing his long terms hopes much good. No missed tackles, but a whole lot of anonymity against the run and the usual coverage struggles. It won’t be lost on Dolphins fans that as Wheeler is making this team, Karlos Dansby is making the team of the week.

Dishonorable Mention: Jon Bostic (CHI) and Dannell Ellerbe (MIA)

Cornerbacks: Alterraun Verner, TEN (-5.2) and Orlando Scandrick, DAL (-4.2)

Three penalties and Verner is the latest in a long line of cornerbacks to leave Mile High with his worst grade of the year. Not a great Monday Night Football for Scandrick who allowed 9-of-11 balls thrown into his coverage for 115 yards and one touchdown. Not ideal.

Dishonorable Mention: Brandon Carr (DAL) and Chris Houston (DET)

Safeties: D.J. Swearinger, HOU (-3.8) and Omar Bolden, DEN (-2.5)

Bolden didn’t put the best case forward to permanently replace Duke Ihenaco against the Titans, seeing 42 snaps on Sunday. As for Swearinger he showed an incredible lack of football awareness to make the kind of mistakes that played a crucial role in his team losing.

Dishonorable Mention: Bacarri Rambo (WAS) and Tashaun Gipson (CLV)
