'Had a Bad Day' Team, Week 13

2013-bad-dayIn an ideal world everyone would play to their best and we’d be left with nothing but praise to give to players.

This isn’t an ideal world.

For whatever reason, guys don’t always play well in the National Football League. It may be that they lack talent, that they suffer from inexperience, or they may just be having one of those days. Regardless we’re here to hold them to account whether it be an undrafted free agent starting his first game, or a 10-time All-Pro at the peak of his powers.

Let’s see who made the Had a Bad Day Team for Week 13.

(Note: Team will be updated after Monday Night Football games are analyzed and on Wednesday when All-22 footage helps us study plays in even more detail where needed with a * noting a change)

Offense

Quarterback: Matt Simms, NYJ (-4.7)

Had his chance to force the Jets to bench Geno Smith for the rest of the season, but in a half of football all he earned was our lowest grade among all quarterbacks this week.

Dishonorable Mention: Brandon Weeden (CLE)

Running Back: Ray Rice, BAL (-2.2)

Another quiet day for Rice who continues to be extremely reliant on his blockers to get anything going.

Dishonorable Mention: Knowshon Moreno (DEN)

Full Back: Frank Summers, BUF (-1.0)

A good week for full blocks by-and-large, so Summers can take solace from being the worst of a good bunch.

Dishonorable Mention: Erik Lorig (TB)

Tight End: Garrett Graham, HOU (-3.4)

Negatives in every area of the game as the team remembers the good old days with a healthy Owen Daniels complemented by Joel Dreessen. Memories…

Dishonorable Mention: Jordan Cameron (CLE)

Wide Receivers: Pierre Garcon, WAS (-4.2) and Darrius Heyward-Bey, IND (-3.3)

Garcon did everything wrong in this one, including fumble, drawing an after-the-whistle penalty, and two drops. Ouch. Heyward-Bey had just the one mind bogglingly bad drop, but the rest of his game couldn’t offset that.

Dishonorable Mention: Donnie Avery (KC) and Mike Brown (JAX)

Tackles: Bradley Sowell, ARZ (-4.6) and Michael Oher, BAL (-3.2)

It’s been a while since Trent Cole looked that good, so give Sowell an assist after he was turned inside and out by the veteran pass rusher. On the right side, Oher false started his way onto this team with three contract-sapping penalties.

Dishonorable Mention: D.J. Fluker (SD) and Don Barclay (GB)

Guards: Zane Beadles, KC (-5.5) and Dan Connolly, NE (-4.9)

The struggles of Knowshon Moreno owed something to Beadles having his worst run blocking day in a long time. As for Connolly, he might call this damage limitation given the form J.J. Watt has been in.

Dishonorable Mention: James Brewer (NYG) and Andre Gurode (OAK)

Center: Samson Satele, IND (-3.3)

Nobody summed up the Colts' struggles with the powerful Titans defensive line quite like Satele.

Dishonorable Mention: Ryan Kalil (CAR)

Defense

Each week we put forward a hybrid defense that features two edge rushers (4-3 defensive ends or 3-4 outside linebackers), three players on the “interior” of the defensive line (3-4 defensive ends or defensive tackles) and two linebackers (all inside linebackers and 4-3 outside linebackers).

Defensive Interior – Ends: Darnell Dockett, ARZ (-3.3) and Kendall Langford, SL (-3.4)

Just the one quarterback hit from Dockett, who you’d thought might have more joy in that regard against Todd Herremans. The inconsistent Langford had one of his off days despite the sack and batted pass. That’s how much he struggled against the run.

Dishonorable Mention: B.J. Raji (GB) and Kendall Reyes (SD)

Defensive Interior – Nose: Isaac Sopoaga, NE (-2.2)

He won’t see his playing time increase with run defense like that.

Dishonorable Mention: Roy Miller (JAX)

Edge Rushers: Shaun Phillips, DEN (-4.2) and Mathias Kiwanuka, NYG (-3.7)

Kiwanuka picked up some late pressure but spent an awful lot of the day getting shoved about by Trent Williams in the run game. On the other side, the hit or miss Phillips responded to two of his best games of the year with his worst.

Dishonorable Mention: Courtney Upshaw (BAL) and Tourek Williams (SD)

Linebackers: Donald Butler, SD (-5.3) and James Anderson, CHI (-5.1)

Rough outing for Anderson as the Vikings ran wild, with him coming in for a bit of a pounding courtesy of Jerome Felton. Joining him, Butler continued his bad year with his worst performance of an injury hit season.

Dishonorable Mention: Lavonte David (TB) and A.J. Hawk (GB)

Cornerbacks: Marcus Cooper, KC (-3.9) and Brandon Flowers, KC (-3.0)

Two Chiefs? Safe to assume that they aren’t enjoying playing Peyton Manning, with Cooper especially having a rough day as the two combined to allow 300 yards between them.

Dishonorable Mention: Dee Milliner (NYJ) and Nickell Robey (BUF)

Safeties: Duke Ihenacho, DEN (-5.8) and Craig Steltz, CHI (-4.6)

Not great from the Bronco, who missed three tackles and got beaten for a touchdown in coverage. Joining him, Steltz also missed three tackles, with his tackle numbers deceiving compared to his actual play.

Dishonorable Mention: Duron Harmon (NE) and J.J. Wilcox (DAL)
