Giants: Pass protection improving

PFF-headlinesThe Giants offensive line faces a difficult test on Sunday as they look to continue their improvement in one of their most glaring weaknesses from a year ago.

In 2013, the Giants offensive line owned the second worst Pass Blocking Efficiency (PBE) rating in the NFL at 69.8, allowing 32 sacks, 33 hits, and 171 hurries in 613 passing plays. That per game average of nearly 15 total pressures-allowed was third-worst in the league. Through 14 games this season, the Giants offensive line has shown significant improvement by ranking 14th in PBE at 80.0, lowering their average total pressures allowed per game to just over 10.

To illustrate how vital pass protection is to the Giants performance, consider that in the team’s five wins, they have a PBE rating of 90.4 and an average of 4.4 total pressures allowed per game. In the team’s nine losses, they have a 75.1 PBE rating and 13.3 total pressures allowed per game.

Furthermore, Giants QB Eli Manning himself has struggled standing in under pressure this year. His NFL QB rating plummets from 100.7 to 58.6 when he is under duress.

Against the likes of Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn (pass rushing grades of +12.6 and +17.2, respectively) on the Rams defensive line in St. Louis, the offensive line of the Giants must figure out a way to contain one of the most dynamic inside out duos in the NFL.
