In the 49ers’ backfield, Frank Gore is still the guy. The team’s all-time leading rusher totaled 276 carries in 2013, up from 258 the year before. He’s averaged at least 15 carries per game each season of his career and should see a good amount of touches this season, too.
However, behind Gore, San Francisco has no immediate answer.
The injury bug has infiltrated the 49ers’ backfield during training camp, with Kendall Hunter tearing his ACL and LaMichael James dislocating his elbow. Hunter, unfortunately, will miss the entirety of 2014 while James likely won’t be cleared to return to the field until the start of the regular season.
Combine these latest developments with the fact that Gore has a considerable amount of tread on his tires and the No. 2 spot on San Francisco’s running back depth chart is now of interest to sleeper-seeking fantasy owners.
