Denver Broncos – Manning’less Broncos Will Continue To Run
As predicted, both Broncos running backs looked more comfortable with Brock Osweiler behind center. It’s not a knock on Peyton Manning….Well, actually yes it it. It’s no secret that the offensive coordinator for any team featuring Peyton Manning in in fact Peyton Manning and for years he has manipulated plays at the line of scrimmage. Whether it was in Indy with Edgerrin James and Joseph Addai or in Denver with Knowshon Moreno and C.J Anderson, Manning’s running backs have enjoyed the spoils of defenses overcompensating in an effort to counter the quarterback’s cerebral dominance.
But father time is undefeated and this season has exposed Manning’s diminished ability to throw the ball effectively. His limited mobility has also made it easier for defenses to reduce the size of the field, resulting in disappointing offensive production from all skill positions.
Brock Osweiler allows the Broncos to run an offense that is more reflective of Gary Kubiak. While they only put up 17 points last week, both Ronnie Hillman and C.J Anderson enjoyed less resistance to the run, combining for 33-161-0 (4.9YPC). While the snap count was evenly distributed (Hillman-37 Anderson-32) Hillman led the way with 21-102-0 (1-2-0). It was only his second game of the season with 20+ carries but he has surpassed 100 yards in each of them.
