Matt Ryan leads the Week 17 waiver wire

While the vast majority of fantasy leagues have now wrapped up the 2015 season with their championship game, there are a small number of leagues that are still going. Some leagues are season-long scoring leagues, some have a two-week playoff, and a small percentage of leagues choose to maximize their football season by having their title game here in Week 17.

Whatever the case, any fantasy football veteran who has had something on the line for Week 17 knows one thing: expect the unexpected. A number of NFL teams with nothing to play for will rest starters and take an unconventional approach this week, making it awfully difficult to predict and extremely haphazard for fantasy owners.

Keeping that in mind, rather than approach waivers with the usual budget considerations that probably no longer are relevant, the Week 17 edition looks at players that are widely available as free agents and might be in position for an increase in playing time, or find themselves with favorable circumstances for potentially strong fantasy output.

Quarterbacks

Matt Ryan, Falcons (vs. New Orleans) – With the NFC playoffs locked up, there’s little left for these teams to play for on that front, but there could be plenty of motivation for fantasy fireworks. Clearly the Falcons are comfortable playing as spoilers and are looking to end a rough season on a positive note. Wideout Julio Jones is 17 receptions and 243 yards away from setting the all-time marks in both categories. It is very unlikely to happen, but with a home date facing what is now the worst pass defense in NFL history, there’s an outside chance that Ryan could be gunning the ball downfield at a frantic pace. Even if Jones doesn’t come anywhere near those marks, this is still a great matchup for Ryan, who has top-five potential in his final 2015 contest.
