The top DFS bargains for Week 13

Let’s be real with one another. This week was a tough week for bargains, but more than anything… I’m having a hard time ignoring the DFS trends of the year.

First, you need to hit at quarterback. If you don’t think a quarterback could get over 20 fantasy points, then you should not play that signal-caller. I don’t care about the price. It is very difficult to make up those points elsewhere. Each week there are a couple quarterbacks with that kind of projection, but the list gets smaller and smaller as the DFS sites adjust their pricing.

Second, running back production is way more predictable than wide receiver production in the top tier. Every week you could have started David Johnson and Ezekiel Elliott and you probably would have cashed. You can even go further with Melvin Gordon, DeMarco Murray, Le’Veon Bell, LeSean McCoy, Devonta Freeman. Any combination of those players would have garnered you points. Unless there is an injury, the bargain production has been hard to find. Not because other players are incapable of having a big game, but because the players I just mentioned just about always have a big game. Hard to compete.

Therefore, I decided to give you a smaller helping of quarterbacks and running backs, as compared to wide receivers and tight ends.

A PFF article needs to provide value. Telling you to start a cheap Alex Smith is disingenuous. Of course, you can start him and he’s less expensive than other options. And then he’ll get you 15 points and you’ll have to claw your way to a cash out, if you’re lucky.

Quarterbacks

DraftKings: $6,400 (11th)
Yahoo: $29 (18th)

Since Week 9, Marcus Mariota and Dak Prescott are tied as the top two quarterbacks in the league, scoring 0.71 fantasy points per dropback. Tied at third are Drew Brees and Cousins with 0.63 points per dropback. In his last three games since their bye, Cousins has thrown eight touchdowns to zero interceptions. He’s thrown over 300 yards in six games so far this season. Jordan Reed’s shoulder injury could hold him out (his status is questionable) but Vernon Davis is playing great football. Davis is a top-20-scoring fantasy tight end in standard and PPR scoring systems. Also, Davis has the 12th-highest PFF grade among tight ends. I get that the Arizona Cardinals are a tough matchup, but last week Matt Ryan threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns. In Week 10, Colin Kaepernick went over 20 fantasy points with a touchdown in the air and on the ground. I’m not saying Cousins will have another aberration game like he did on Thanksgiving, but I do think he will out play his modest price tag by a large margin.
