Top 20 fantasy WR seasons of the PFF era, Nos. 11-20

Without context in fantasy, we can easily trick ourselves into under- or overvaluing a particular player. On the other hand, when everyone else in your league is looking at that player in the vacuum of recency bias, an opportunity exists to gain an edge.

In compiling the top fantasy seasons of the PFF era for each position, context was a word I kept coming back to. So, let’s add some context to this list right from the get-go. Remember that awesome fantasy season that DeAndre Hopkins just turned in as the overall No. 1 WR? Or how about Antonio Brown’s league-best year in 2016? Well, neither was good enough to crack the top-20 fantasy seasons by a wide receiver during the PFF era (2007-present).

So now that we have some sense of just what kind of dominance it takes to make the cut, let’s dive into the list beginning with Nos. 11-20. We’ll revisit the key PFF metrics that set these players apart, and even look to draw some parallels to current players.

20. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts (2007)

Playing alongside some fellow named Manning, Wayne turned in a league- and career-high 1,515 receiving yards along with 10 TDs during the 2007 season. A trusted target, Wayne saw double-digit targets on eight occasions and was charged with only six drops, as his 70-percent catch rate ranked inside the top-10. He finished tops among 44 qualified WRs in yards per route, with 543 snaps in route. That production closely mirrors the 2017 version of Antonio Brown, who averaged 2.87 yards on 534 snaps in route, trailing only Julio Jones (3.08 YPRR on 469 routes). And yet, Wayne’s 2007 campaign was only good enough to place 20th on this list.
