Even if you don’t play in developmental (devy) fantasy football leagues, as a dynasty owner it is paramount to be aware of the incoming crop of talent from college football if you want to achieve consistent success. Having at least a basic knowledge of college prospects before they go through the gauntlet of the NFL draft evaluation process enables you to avoid the traps that inevitably come from overrated combine metrics, smokescreens from NFL front offices, and bias towards team landing spot.
That is the reason why, as I did last year, I will be incorporating college players in addition to rookies in my weekly in-season news, notes and analysis post. I’ll be keeping you up to date on the goings-on of the biggest prospects in college and how they are trending as they make their way towards the NFL.
To set the table for the season, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at my current top 30 offensive skill position players to watch from a dynasty league standpoint, with an in-depth look at the top 10. The current consensus in the dynasty community is that the 2017 class is a cut above the rookies we have been drafting this year, so it will be an important season to pay attention to.
1. Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia (2017)
Chubb’s presence at the top of this list is admittedly a bit of a leap of faith given the horrific knee injury he suffered in 2015, where he tore multiple ligaments. However, recent reports have indicated that the true junior is fully participating in summer practices and expected to be ready for the start of the season.
Prior to the injury, Chubb’s per-game average on the ground over five weeks was 18 attempts for 149 yards (8.2 yards per carry), totaling seven rushing touchdowns with four grabs for 32 yards and another score. This was after a 2014 true freshman season where he took the reins of Georgia’s offense following Todd Gurley’s injury to the tune of 219 carries for 1,547 yards (7.1 YPC) and 14 touchdowns, also chipping in 18 receptions for 213 yard and two touchdowns through the air.
