Running backs to target, avoid in PPR leagues vs. standard

It’s important to stay ahead of the game as the majority of season-long fantasy leagues make the transition to the half- and/or full-point PPR scoring format. Today, we’ll give you a head start by pinpointing the running backs who are most affected by PPR scoring.

Advanced data that is unique to Pro Football Focus, such as passing routes run, yards per route run, yards per target, and targets per route give us a better idea of each running back’s usage in the passing game.

We’ll look into seven running backs who deserve a boost in your PPR rankings and three running backs who need to be dropped down your draft boards immediately.

Target

James White, New England Patriots

Fantasy owners have long struggled with trusting a Bill Belichick running back, but White deserves your trust in PPR. Even if he hasn’t earned your trust yet, earlier this offseason, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that White has earned it from both Belichick and Tom Brady. The data back this up. White finished with the fourth-most targets per route run (0.26) among qualifying backs and the most of any RB who saw greater than 40 targets in the passing game. White also finished with the third-most yards per route run (1.9), so it’s not like he hasn’t proven that he can be effective with a higher volume role in the passing game. White is often viewed as a RB3/flex, but now that he has established himself as New England’s passing down back, he has a much greater chance of finishing as a mid-pack RB2 in PPR leagues.
