Optimal DFS lineups: Philip Rivers leads the top Yahoo lineup

Two weeks of the NFL season are now in the books, giving us more snap percentage and target share data to work on as we try to predict usage moving forward. The injury bug has already hit the NFL hard, providing clarity in some cases but a muddled outlook in others. While we should have more confidence in our evaluations than we did two weeks ago, we still have almost 90 percent of the season remaining, so it is a great time to take risks before the pricing algorithms are in midseason form.

As I will every week, I’ll remind you that it’s important to remember some of the subtle differences between daily fantasy and other types of fantasy football, as well as the differences between the aforementioned DFS game types. Daily fantasy operates under a budget, so the relative value a player offers at his respective price is just as important as his raw statistical production when constructing lineups. As far as cash games vs. tournaments, remember that 50/50s and Double Ups generally have a lower cash line while tournaments will require a unique and high scoring lineup, so choose the ceilings and floors of your players accordingly. My optimal tournament lineup for this week in Yahoo DFS is at the end of this post.

Quarterbacks

Much maligned in the fantasy community after finishing 18th in fantasy points in 2015, Matt Ryan ($32) is currently your fantasy QB2 through two games, right behind Cam Newton. The veteran has done this despite being tied for just 16th in pass attempts, due in large part to five touchdowns after throwing only 21 total in 2015. It appears those end-zone woes that hampered his production last year were more an aberration than a trend (he still had 4,591 yards, good for fifth in the league). This week, in a game featuring the highest Vegas point total of the week (53.5), he gets a Saints defense that was already missing their top corner and on Wednesday placed starter P.J. Williams on injured reserve. A top-six-priced quarterback on both DraftKings and FanDuel, he is a perfect high floor cash-game play as the 13th-most-expensive option on Yahoo.
