Football is back. Training camps are underway, the pads are on, contact is taking place, and injuries are going to happen. Last year, it was Jordy Nelson and Kelvin Benjamin who found themselves on the trainer’s table, being diagnosed with torn ACLs. To the game of fantasy football, these things matter, in more ways than one. First, of course, it removes Nelson and Benjamin from your draft boards. But also, the effect it has on another player is perhaps even more significant. Most people know what a handcuff is, and while that applies to running backs, it’s got a much bigger effect than most think on the wide receiver position.
Keep this handy when drafting, because once you get to those later rounds, it’s important to aim for these players. The players I’m talking about are just one injury away from being a top-20 option. In some cases, it doesn’t even necessarily have to be one particular player to get hurt, but rather any one player at their position. Some of these players may even have value without injury, but they aren’t on many radars right now.
These are the players your leaguemates will run to the waiver wire to grab if an injury takes place. But have no fear, because they’ll be sitting on your roster, just waiting to enter your starting lineup.
Phillip Dorsett, Indianapolis Colts
Dorsett is one of those players who doesn’t need any one player to go down with an injury, because there is so much potential in the Colts passing game. When looking at the landscape of their roster, it’s easy to allocate more and more targets to the wide receiver position.
