Welcome to our Week 3 examination of the best DFS tournament plays on the DraftKings slate. Each week I’ll evaluate the best fantasy football plays for the GPP pools to (hopefully) help you take down a big one.

Quarterback scoring is up, and it looks like it’s here to stay.

Through the first two weeks we have 15 performances of a quarterback scoring 25-plus DraftKings points. There were only six at this time last year.

Finding top-scoring quarterbacks and high-scoring games to target should be our skeleton key to tournament roster building. It’s not rocket science. The players in high-scoring games have a higher probability of putting up more fantasy points. Let’s take a holistic view of the Week 3 main slate while dialing in on how to approach DraftKings tournaments.

Roster-building strategies

Save salary with mid-tier running backs

Last week was a great week for us to pay up at running back. Todd Gurley, Christian McCaffrey, and Melvin Gordon all eclipsed the 30-point barrier and provided massive fantasy outings.

This week, there are several mid-tier running backs who are projected to see plenty of volume. Being fluid with our roster construction is a necessity. DK’s pricing algorithms aren’t always perfect, and when we can find some affordable running backs that project for volume, we need to target them heavily in our builds.

The most shocking player who wasn’t priced up was Giovani Bernard. Given that Joe Mixon’s injury status was widely known since Friday morning, it’s a bit of a surprise Bernard isn’t more expensive. He has shown that he’s a capable three-down back and projects to see plenty of volume given the lack of other options behind him. We also have a fairly established on/off split knowing that Bernard fared quite well last season when Mixon was banged up towards the end of last year.
