Week 17 has a bit of a preseason feel to it.
Not only do we need to monitor which teams are playing for playoff seeding, but we also need to see which teams have thrown in the towel and are ready to start evaluating some of their young talent.
The latter can provide some unique value to the slate and alter tournaments wildly.
Look no further than C.J. Anderson last week. He took over a bell-cow role for the Rams, playing on 75% of the running back snaps and seeing 66% of the running back touches. He finished the game one yard shy of his career-best, rushing for 167 and a score. Finding which running backs can have that type of bell-cow volume at a reduced price is going to make or break the slate.
We’ve already received word that Matt Breida is ruled out. Jeff Wilson ($4,400) enters play as a salary saving option as an adept rushing and receiving back. Phillip Lindsay was just placed on IR, now opening the door to the Broncos backfield for cheap alternatives. Atlanta is likely letting Tevin Coleman walk this offseason. Do we see one final big performance from him or does the team try to evaluate what they have in Brian Hill? Hill just took eight carries for 115 yards on limited snaps last week.
It’s shaping up to be a week to stay active following beat reporters and coach speak. Finding the right low-priced running backs to play could be the key to the slate.
