DFS guide: Week 1 in FanDuel tournaments

DENVER, CO - SEPTEMBER 03: J.J. Nelson #14 of the Arizona Cardinals makes a 59 touchdown reception against the Denver Broncos to take a 22-20 lead in the fourth quarter during preseason action at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on September 3, 2015 in Denver, Colorado. Tournaments on FanDuel are easily my favorite thing about DFS, and I’m thrilled to be writing about them on a weekly basis.

I always throw my cash game lineup into a tournament — there’s nothing worse than seeing your cash lineup go off but not having it be in a tournament — but beyond that, I find my core group and build a handful of rosters around those players.

Week 1 outlook: FanDuel pricing and projections

Tier Definitions

1 2 3 4 5
QB $8000+ $7500-$7900 $7000-$7400 $6500-$6900 $6100-$6400
RB $8000+ $7000-$7900 $6000-$6900 $5000-$5900 $4600-$4900
WR $8000+ $7000-$7900 $6000-$6900 $5000-$5900 $4600-$4900
TE $7000+ $6000-$6900 $5500-$5900 $5000-$5400 $4600-$4900

A brief explanation of The Box: The first row within each tier represents the average salary of every player in that tier. The second row represents the average projected fantasy points for every player in that tier. The third row is the average value of each player in that tier (points/salary*1000).

As the season progresses, we’ll be able to incorporate the actual performance of each player within each tier to add a new layer of confidence to the Box. For Week 1, we just have projections.

The Box is also color coordinated within each position throughout the tiers. Green means more projected value, red means less. This gives you a quick and easy way to identify where the value might be hiding each week.

Quarterbacks: Looking at Tier 2 or Tier 2 QBs with access to high ceilings

For GPPs, I typically like to identify a set number of quarterbacks and build a bunch of GPP rosters around those players.

Here’s my general breakdown (not set in stone):

  • 2-4 rosters = 2 quarterbacks
  • 5-9 rosters = 3 quarterbacks
  • 10-14 rosters = 4-5 quarterbacks
  • 15+ rosters = 5-6 quarterbacks

While I like to save money at quarterback in cash games, I’m all over the map in GPPs. But for Week 1, The Box shows us that Tier 1 and Tier 2 quarterbacks offer the most value, and that’s where I’m mostly looking.
