DFS guide: Week 1 in DraftKings cash games

We’re here.

Week 1 is upon us and after a seemingly neverending offseason, we can finally get back to the best part of football – DFS.

I’m honored to be your Sherpa during this NFL DFS Season and hope to help you along the way toward a profitable year on DraftKings. Throughout the season, I’ll be using a variety of different tools and statistics to help show you not only what players I’m interested in, but lay the foundation for you to learn how to select these players for yourself as well.

For cash games, we’re aiming for players to get at least 3x value to merit roster consideration. We’re not as concerned with ownership in these types of contests compared to guaranteed prize pool contests. We want to make sure we’re looking at players with solid floors, both volume and gamescript on their side, and a little upside to help capture the win in any head-to-heads. I’ll try to give you players at varying price points to help aid in roster flexibility and overall construction. Without any further ado, let’s dive into Week 1’s DraftKings cash guide.

Quarterback targets

Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans ($6,800)

Mariota embodies the perfect cash-game play for me. He’s a dual-threat quarterback who is playing at home with a massive implied team total (26.5 points). It also benefits Mariota that Oakland’s defense is already injury-stricken before Week 1 even starts. Defensive backs Keith McGill and Obi Melifonwu are both out indefinitely and pass-rushing star Khalil Mack is questionable to suit up as of the time of this writing. Mariota should have little difficulty moving the ball up and down the field against this defense. Last year the Raiders allowed 3.5 red-zone trips per game to opposing offenses, sixth-most in the league. Mariota is unreal in the red zone. Over his two-year career, he has completed 60 of his 94 red-zone pass attempts (64 percent) with 33 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Mariota – and his weapons – are all in great spots this week in a game that merits a ton of game stacking in GPPs.

Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles ($5,300)

Entering the 2017 season with a vastly improved receiving corps, Wentz is an absolute bargain at $5,300 and merits cash-game consideration. Washington allowed the seventh-most passing yards last season and allowed opposing quarterbacks to eclipse 15.9 points (3x value for Wentz) in 12-of-16 games last year. Granted, Wentz was one of those failed games, but he also threw for 314 yards and 18.06 DK points in his other matchup against them. Given the weapons he had to throw to last year, it’s rather impressive he was able to string together any fantasy-relevant outings. Acquiring Alshon Jeffery was huge for the Eagles, and while he’ll get the shadow treatment from Josh Norman, Jeffery’s three best routes happen to be the three worst routes that Norman struggles covering. This game has a 47.5-point projected total and projects for plenty of passing volume from both offenses in what should be a back-and-forth affair.
