PFF's fantasy football cheat sheet for Week 9

In the NFL regular season, we’re basically at the halfway point. But in fantasy, it’s more like two-thirds. With a 13-week regular season, eight weeks is just about 62 percent of the way there.

Things have really taken shape. You have an idea of whether you’re in contention for this season, whether you need to make a late run, or whether you can turn your eyes to 2017 (or, if you aren’t in a keeper league, basketball or real life or something). Whatever your next step is, research can help.

This is our weekly fantasy cheat sheet. You’ll want to tour through our full compendium of advice from the week, but if you’re short on time, this cheat sheet will get you most of the way to where you need to be. Below, you’ll find five of our top pieces of advice from the week, with links to the pieces the advice is drawn from. After that, you’ll find links to the rest of our season-long content for the week, and from there we move on to our DFS advice. Good luck in Week 9.

Season-long fantasy

Sit New Orleans RB Tim Hightower
(from Daniel Kelley’s start/sit advice)

Hightower came in for a benched Mark Ingram in Week 8 and put up 155 yards from scrimmage. That’s exciting, but it’s also a mirage — Hightower finished the week as PFF’s lowest-graded running back, succeeding more based on opportunity and usage than performance. Ingram has clearly been the better running back over a large sample, and the bet here is that Week 8’s benching was more of a “message” benching than one for cause. Expect Ingram to seize his job back, which means Hightower heads back to the bench … or the waiver wire.

Buy Cleveland WR Corey Coleman
(from Mike Tagliere’s stock market check)

The Browns rookie has been out since Week 2 with a broken hand, but he’s expected to return Sunday against the Cowboys. The last time Coleman played, he had 104 yards and two scores, flashing the potential the Browns saw when they took him in the first round of the draft. Regardless of whether the Browns go with Josh McCown or Cody Kessler Sunday, Coleman is going to be right alongside Terrelle Pryor in the pecking order in Cleveland, and he has enormous potential.

Downgrade Oakland WR Amari Cooper
(from Jeff Ratcliffe’s flex rankings)

Cooper is the No. 1 fantasy receiver over the last four weeks, with double-digit targets in three of four games and an average of 11 in that time. He, Michael Crabtree and quarterback Derek Carr have formed one of the league’s most formidable trios so far this season. But he hasn’t proven to be totally matchup-proof (his one subpar game in that four-game stretch came when he was shadowed by an above-average corner), and he and the Raiders draw a top-flight Denver defense this week, making Cooper hard to use as a WR1.

Stream Miami QB Ryan Tannehill
(from Mike Castiglione’s look at QB streamers)

The Jets’ defense is famously poor against the pass, graded 28th in pass coverage and last in the pass rush. The team does have a strong run defense, though, which could slow down the suddenly amazing Jay Ajayi in the running game and force the Dolphins to resort to the pass. Tannehill has struggled lately, but still has a career-best average yards per attempt. His passer rating is 112.4 when he avoids the pass rush, and that appears likely in this matchup.

Add Seattle RB C.J. Prosise
(from Jeff Ratcliffe’s waiver wire check)

In Week 8, Prosise played 23 snaps. Starter Christine Michael played 29. Prosise is nominally the Seahawks’ pass-catching back, but he also had four carries for 23 yards in the game. With Thomas Rawls struggling to get healthy and the bloom a bit off the Michael rose, Prosise is a high-upside stash who could provide dividends down the road.
