Many leagues are approaching or passing their trade deadlines, which is a critical time of the year to evaluate your chances for this season. If you are out of contention, there are several ways to help yourself for next year. The classic move is to trade away pieces with little long-term value that can help a contender now for young players with better potential. If you lack a marquee veteran to that end, be creative with your packages. If you have a defense that has strong playoff matchups, throw them in the deal. Trade away any players that you would drop after the season, even if your only net is a slight improvement of a draft pick. Now that the byes are finished, there is little reason to hold backups at defense or for elite quarterback or tight ends, so load up on back and receivers with an eye on possible playing time changes in 2013.
