Raiders could draft a running back insurance policy

  • The Oakland Raiders have been linked to running back Marshawn Lynch, though for now Lynch is still retired, and even if they reach an agreement with him, Lynch is a 31-year-old back off of a year’s absence.
  • The Raiders have two young running backs on their roster in Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington with potential. But they are undersized, and the loss of Latavius Murray this offseason leaves a need for a power back to run between the tackles and in short yardage situations.
  • The best fit in this draft for Oakland would be Leonard Fournette of LSU, who's likely to be gone when their pick at No. 24 overall comes up. Beyond the first round, the best options for the Raiders could be Samaje Perine of Oklahoma or D'Onta Foreman of Texas. Perine scored 49 rushing TDs in three college seasons, and Foreman forced 64 missed tackles on runs in 2016.
  • On Day 3, Raider targets for a power back could be James Conner of Pitt or Elijah Hood of North Carolina. One possible late-round sleeper is Chris Carson of Oklahoma State, who missed four games in 2016 with a hand injury. Carson led draft-eligible HBs in PFF's elusive rating, which factors yards gained after contact and missed tackles forced.
