Position fit:
Inside linebacker in a 3-4 or 4-3
Stats to know:
Second-highest graded FBS linebacker as a true sophomore in 2014. 12 stops in his last collegiate game was the most of any player in bowl season
What he does best:
• Always plays moving forward against the run. Meets blocks at the line of scrimmage play after play
• Instincts and diagnoses of downhill runs is off the charts
• NFL level lateral quickness. Slides over and across blocks extremely well
• Supremely coordinated. Body control to evade climbing linemen
• Always balanced and under control. Textbook at breaking down in space
Biggest concern:
• Downhill nature an issue on wide runs. Can be late to get lateral and can be cut off
• Limited athleticism and has rigid hips. Not going to be someone you have covering the slot
• Stack and shed ability almost non-existent. Will get taken for a ride if he gets locked in at second level
• Plays lighter than his listed weight of 246 pounds
Player Production Comparison:
Vontaze Burfict, Cincinnati Bengals
Bottom line:
There is little doubt Scooby will be a productive player against the run, but how much is that productivity worth with question marks in coverage?
