PFF scouting report: Ricky Seals-Jones, WR, Texas A&M

HOUSTON, TX - DECEMBER 28: Ricky Seals-Jones #9 of the Texas A&M Aggies cathes pass for a 3 yard touchdown as he beats Cre Moore #23 of the Kansas State Wildcats during the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl on December 28, 2016 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

Name: Ricky Seals-Jones

School: Texas A&M

Position fit: Slot WR/H-back/move TE

Stats to know: Played 14 percent of his snaps at tight end.

What he does best:

  • Has an exceptionally big frame with long arms for a slot receiver.
  • Presents a physical mismatch for defensive backs and a speed mismatch for linebackers.
  • Can run away from defenders after the catch despite his size.
  • Has the physical tools to became a dangerous red-zone target.
  • Catches slightly inaccurate passes due to his large catch radius.
  • Uses his big frame and physicality at the catch point and shields the ball away from defenders.
  • Does a nice job blocking linebackers and safeties when lined up in the slot. Posted top-10 run-blocking grades among receivers in both 2014 and 2015.

Biggest concern:

  • Does not have the speed or quickness to separate, most of the times when he was open it was due to scheming or stacked releases.
  • Cannot make contested catches on a consistent basis despite his physical tools.
  • Tends to be slow to secure the football, which led to multiple late pass breakups by defenders.
  • Has inconsistent hands, which resulted in 15 drops over the last three years.
  • While Seals-Jones does a nice job blocking on the perimeter, he still lacks experience as a blocker in the box and improving in this area will only add versatility as he may need to find a home as an H-back.

Player comparison: Quincy Enunwa, New York Jets

There are very few slot receivers in the NFL that resemble Seals-Jones’ size, but Enunwa is one of them. However, similarly to Enunwa, Seals-Jones will probably need some time to adjust to the NFL as he will not be able to rely solely on his frame among the pros and will also need to use his physical tools better besides improving his route running.

Bottom line: His exceptional frame and ability to become a dangerous red-zone target makes Seals-Jones an intriguing target. However, he will probably need to sit and learn initially as he will have to take better advantage of his physical tools and improve his route-running to help him separate from defenders.
