PFF scouting report: Cam Robinson, T, Alabama

during the Goodyear Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium on December 31, 2015 in Arlington, Texas.

Name: Cam Robinson

School: Alabama

Position fit: Tackle

Stats to know: Tied for the 90th overall grade among FBS offensive tackles in 2016

What he does best:

  • Moves well, athletic on the go, strong when he gets hands on defender.
  • Anchors down pretty well in pass-blocking, good use of locking rusher out with arms.
  • Has shown the ability to make every type of block in the run game.
  • Good on the move on screen blocks. Had seventh-highest screen-block grade in the nation among tackles in 2016 and tied for fourth in 2015.
  • Good power with hands and engagement as run-blocker.
  • Demonstrates physical tools to “man up” with high talented defenders.
  • Plays hard on every snap.

Biggest concern:

  • Tendency to play on toes and loses balance. Often impatient in pass protection or front side of run plays.
  • Leans too much weight forward in pass-blocking with head forward (overextension).
  • Too many dead-ball penalties (23 total penalties last two years).
  • Lacks awareness at times.
  • Falls down or doesn’t get to second-level linebackers from time to time.
  • Plays with too wide of a base sometimes and on toes, which might indicate he doesn’t have the great hip flexibility everyone assumes he has. His grade production doesn’t match the hype.

Player comparison: Michael Oher, Carolina Panthers

Like Oher, Robinson has some good and some bad to his game, and he may bounce around between strong and inconsistent play.

Bottom line: Robinson’s best work looks really good, but there are still far too many ugly plays on tape. While he’s been touted as a first-round pick since his freshman year, and his early performance warranted the hype, he simply hasn’t produced at that level over the last two years. Robinson may ultimately put it all together as he can make the necessary blocks in the run game and he has the tools to develop as a pass-protector, but he has to improve his technique while cutting back on mental errors, and pre-snap shoddiness to reach his full potential.
