Crazy Week 5 games led to some crazy stats. BYU and Toledo combined for 108 points, Georgia and Tennessee scored 13 points in the final 19 seconds and the Washington Huskies defense achieved elite status in front of a national audience.
After taking a look at all of the numbers, here are five crazy good stats you need to know as we head into the sixth week of play.
1. Zay Jones (WR, East Carolina) has been targeted 87 times through five games
Jones has received over 10 targets in every game so far and has two games in which he was targeted at least 24 times. He has 21 more targets than the 2015 leader through five games (Tajae Sharpe). He has converted those targets into 66 receptions. At this pace he would finish the season with an eye-popping 158 receptions. The 6-1 senior may not be a household name yet, but that will soon change.
2. Jamaal Williams (RB, BYU) has 452 yards after contact and has forced 26 missed tackles
Williams absolutely torched Toledo last weekend with a school record 273 yards. He averaged 10.1 yards per carry and 5.6 yards after contact per carry. BYU won the game 55-53 after a combined 1,278 yards of offense, but Williams came out as the big winner. He produced highlight run after highlight run definitely improving his draft stock. Williams has some Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in him this year with three games over 160 yards and two with under 60. The Cougars travel to East Lansing on Saturday to face a solid Spartan defense.
3. Arkansas’ Frank Ragnow is far and away the best run blocking center in college football
Ragnow’s current run blocking grade of 11.6 is 4.5 points ahead of the second-place center. His gaudy grade includes a Week-4 hiccup against Texas A&M in which he posted a run blocking grade of -2.7. Ragnow has excelled in pass protection as well, allowing 0 hits or sacks on 149 passing snaps. The junior from Minnesota is on the Rimington Trophy watch list — an award that's granted to the top center in the country.
4. Budda Baker (S, Washington) is the top run-stuffing safety in the nation
The junior leads the nation among safeties with a run stop percentage of 15.4. That means that on 15.4 percent of the plays he lines up within eight yards of the line of scrimmage, he is primarily responsible for stopping a run. In Week 3 against Stanford and Christian McCaffrey, Baker posted a run defense grade of 1.4 and put McCaffrey on his worst game of the season with only 49 yards. As a unit, the Washington Huskies are PFF College’s third-best run defense in the nation with an overall grade of 69.8.
5. Jake Replogle (DT, Purdue) has 22 quarterback pressures in only four games from the tackle position
Defensive tackle is not typically known as a position that excels in rushing the passer. Replogle is trying to change that. He leads all DTs with a pass rush productivity rate (PRP) of 14.3. He has 22 pressures on only 117 snaps. Defensive ends in the 4-3 and outside linebackers in the 3-4 are typically known as the premier pass rushing positions, but only 10 players at those positions have a higher PRP than Replogle. Replogle is PFF College’s top-ranked defensive tackle and has the highest-graded as a pass-rusher and run stopper. He’s simply a beast.
