Chiefs: Makeshift secondary? No problem

PFF-headlinesInjuries, poor play, and necessity has turned the Kansas City Chiefs secondary into a melting pot of inconsistency – but surprisingly the Chiefs boast the No. 1 pass defense in the NFL.

CB Sean Smith has been the best player for the Chiefs secondary posting a +7.0 pass coverage rating and playing 572 out of 576 possible total snaps.

Pro Bowl SS Eric Berry has only played 225 snaps due to injury and hasn’t played to his status (-1.8 coverage grade).

Sophomore CB Marcus Cooper struggled as a starter in Weeks 2-5 (-8.7 in 148 coverage snaps) and has seen just 30 total snaps since.

Other than a monster game against the Patriots in Week 4 (+3.5 and 39.6 passer rating to his coverage,) SS Husain Abdullah has been relatively quiet (-0.6 and 100.1) in his other 287 coverage snaps.

Ron Parker has been versatile, playing primarily at outside CB  in Weeks 1, 9 and 10 and at FS for the games in between.  He’s been solid in pass coverage (+3.0) and had a good outing last week allowing only 4 of 10 passing for 21 yards and two passes defensed.  He’s expected to play at outside CB again this week against the Seahawks.
