As teams are looking to maximize their cap space ahead of free agency there are bound to be casualties. One such casualty is the now former Chiefs tight end Anthony Fasano.
The move comes via Jeff Darlington, who also reports it frees up around $2m in cap space, and doesn’t come as much as a surprise. Fasano has always been one of the more underrated tight ends in the league, capable of operating inline and offering plenty in the run game, while also contributing in the passing game. But 2014 wasn’t his finest season (-14.6 grade) and the Chiefs appear more than ready to let Travis Kelce completely off the reins.
Kelce was one of the most impressive tight ends in the league in 2014, finishing second only to Rob Gronkowski in terms of Yards per Route Run (2.26), and fourth overall in our tight end rankings. He’s proved particularly strong after the catch (17 forced missed tackles) in an offense that might look to make life easier for him with some legit receiving options on the outside via free agency or the draft.
Back to Fasano and there will no doubt be a market for him with teams hoping his 2014 is an aberration. Just don’t expect an every down player or the kind of run blocker he was earlier in his career.
