Chargers: Rookies making an impact

PFF-headlinesIt is no secret that the Chargers’ rookie class last year helped them return to the playoffs for the first time in three years. DJ Fluker, Keenan Allen, Manti Te’o and Jahleel Addae all played significant roles in last year's resurgence.

It seems that General Manager, Tom Telesco may have done it again. First-round draft pick Jason Verrett currently sits as our second-ranked cornerback this year. Verrett’s biggest play of the season came last week as he picked off Derek Carr to complete the Chargers’ comeback-win over the Oakland Raiders.

Second-round draft pick Jerry Attaochu has been limited this year with a hamstring injury; however when on the field Attaochu seems to make plays. Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals, Attaochu made a splash with a sack fumble and a blocked punt in his first career game.

Third-round draft pick Chris Watt has platooned at right guard the last three weeks and had his best game of the year last week with a +1.0 overall rating.

Finally, undrafted rookie free agent Branden Oliver has burst onto the scene the last two games. Oliver leads all rookie running backs in rushing yards and has a +3.3 overall grade which is good for 11th  in our rankings.

Both Oliver and Verrett are featured in our Race for Rookie of the Year watch.
