Buccaneers: Wright steps in at safety

PFF-headlinesWith Mark Barron on the move to St. Louis, a hole has opened up in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ secondary that will likely be filled by fifth-year veteran Major Wright.

Wright has already seen some time as a starter this season, playing three games in place of fellow safety Dashon Goldson, when Goldson was injured earlier in the year. Wright acquitted himself quite capably with a -1.0 overall grade across those three starts, not necessarily a significant impression, but he held his own; and right now in Tampa Bay that's enough.

It’s not as large of a sample size as other full-time starters at safety, but in 127 coverage snaps this year, Wright has only allowed three receptions on seven targets. That rate of 42.3 Cover Snaps per Reception ranks 7th out of 85 qualifying safeties. His 10.0 combined Tackling Efficiency, with only two missed tackles on the season against seventeen made tackles, is also a better figure than either Barron’s (6.5) or Goldson’s (4.9).

Obviously the Buccaneers were hoping for more than they got out of Barron when they selected him seventh-overall in the 2012 Draft, but Major Wright might be able to provide just as much bang at a much lower buck.
