Bears Re-Sign Charles Tillman

tillman_tribChicago re-signed veteran CB Charles Tillman to a one-year deal worth reportedly just under $3.5 million. The long-time Bear returns for his 12th season with the team.

A prototype Tampa-2 corner, Tillman has posted at least 75 total tackles in 9-of-11 seasons as a pro. He’s also forced a whopping 42 fumbles, picked off 36 balls, and scored eight times in his career.

Last season was a rough one for Tillman. He battle injuries, leading to ineffective play over the first half of the season, and he ultimately landed on injured reserved with a torn triceps.

Tillman tested the open market, but there was little interest in his services outside of a visit with his former head coach Lovie Smith in Tampa.

The talk leading up to free agency was whether the 33-year-old would be willing to shift to safety. This seems a logical transition for Tillman given his skillset and ability to make big plays.

While Tillman was once an elite-level fantasy option, it’s unlikely he’ll retain that sort of IDP value in 2014. Still, his high tackle floor and big-play upside make him a viable fantasy commodity. Whether he shifts to safety or not, a healthy Tillman in an every-down role deserves consideration as a DB2.
