Justin Houston is the NFL’s best edge rusher right now

One of the fun aspects of our new PFF rating system, which measures how good players are right now, entering the 2015 season, is that it allows us to see which players rank the highest at each position.

While there are plenty of good edge rushers in the NFL right now, the player who ranks No. 1 in our system is the Chiefs’ Justin Houston.

He finished 2014 with as the top player in our pass-rushing productivity stat, which incorporates sacks, hits and hurries on a per-snap basis. He terrorized opposing offenses from his 3-4 outside linebaker position, earning 23 sacks, eight hits and 54 hurries. He earned a positive pass-rush grade in 12 of Kansas City’s 16 games. He was very effective rushing from both the right and left sides.

Houston certainly has some stiff competition for the title of NFL’s best edge rusher. His PFF rating is 92.0, while Von Miller is right behind him at 91.6 and Robert Quinn just behind that at 90.5. But for now, there’s no more effective edge rusher in the league than Houston.
