Jets: Babin’s resurgence

PFF-headlinesJason Babin‘s career took a turn for the worse in Jacksonville, recording a -6.7 overall grade in 21 games for the Jaguars, thanks in large part to a -8.8 run defense grade. However a move to the New York Jets, coupled with a position switch (from defensive end in a 4-3, to outside linebacker in a 3-4) have helped Babin get back to his best; his +13.3 overall grade is the seventh-best in the league at the position.

With a cumulative +72.8 pass rushing grade since 2007 Babin has always impressed as a pass rusher, so it’s no surprise to see him make an impact as a rotational pass rusher for the Jets. Babin has recorded three sacks and 31 total pressures on his way to a +5.5 pass rush grade, and an 11.0 Pass Rushing Productivity, good enough for 11th out of 47 qualifying 3-4 outside linebackers.

Perhaps more surprising however has been Babin’s strength against the run, his +7.9 run defense grade is his best since we began keeping record. Babin is the only one of 50 qualifying outside linebackers without a missed tackle this season giving him a perfect Tackling Efficiency.

As a Jets fan, he is frequently out of position on run plays. Its nice that hes very good at not missing tackles, but he does not always play the run very well coming off blocks, taking good angles and keeping contain on the outside.
