Every Tuesday I’ll be giving you the lowdown on which individual defensive players to target for the upcoming week’s waiver wire, so without further ado here is this week’s under the radar prospects.
Defensive Lineman
Chris Long, St Louis Rams 2 – 3% of FAAB
With each game that Robert Quinn’s reputation grows and he accumulates more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, the better the matchups for Long will become. A more than accomplished pass rusher in his own right, the attention that Quinn is generating has allowed Long to reap bountiful fantasy rewards over the last four games as he has racked up 14 total tackles, eight for a loss and a further five sacks. It’s not like Quinn hasn’t been doing a job himself either as he has five sacks and seven tackles for loss in the same time span. Now the Rams offense is without Sam Bradford, expect a slight bump in defensive snaps as the offensive struggles to sustain drives, making Long a much more viable DL2, albeit a somewhat boom-or-bust play dependant on big plays.
Chris Jones, New England 1 – 2% of FAAB
In defensive tackle required leagues if you don’t land Geno Atkins or Ndamulong Suh during the draft, unless Lady Luck has shined on you, you’ll likely be semi-steaming your starter each week. Well Nick Fairley (and Suh) owners are looking for their bye week replacement and rookie Chris Jones, who is already on his third team in New England (having been waived by the Texans and Bucs), might be the short term answer. His 17 total tackles in the past two weeks is only one less than Geno Atkins has recorded all year, and to top it off he’s had 4.5 sacks in the previous four weeks, so he’s he’s certainly making the most of his increased playing time with Vince Wilfork on IR. Ride Jones while he is hot if you’re a defensive tackle streamer…
