IDP Waiver Wire - Week 5

jonbosticWe’ve now passed the quarter pole on the fantasy season and it’s getting dangerously close to make or break time for your roster. I’d still urge against abandoning those under-performing fantasy studs, and being wary of overpaying for the over-performing role players, but without further ado lets look at this week’s recommended pickups.

Defensive Lineman

Now that we’ve entered bye week territory, the overall player rankings require a little bit of extra analysis before you insta-add someone. Make note of a player's average points per game, as well as the consistency of their scoring, before diving in and submitting a claim. One player who has played all four weeks of the season so far, and been productive in each game, is Corey Liuget. Although he only has 1.5 sacks to his name, Liuget has also amassed three tackles for loss (in three separate games), as well as 15 total tackles. He’s not a DE1 in the making – he just doesn’t have the pass-rush skills to threaten a monster-sack season – but he can be a dependable second starter for your team, or an elite-level backup and bye-week alternative.

Steelers’ defensive end Cameron Heyward is of a similar mold. A player I highlighted several times last season, he is already showing form reminiscent of last year with his run-stuffing play style. His 14 total tackles (just eight solo) is supported by four tackles for a loss and two sacks. While those are not world-beating statistics, you can rest easy in the knowledge a zero point score on any given Sunday is very unlikely. Heyward is in the tier behind Liuget, but would be of more interest in tackle-heavy scoring systems.
