We are nearly a month into the season, and players either getting injured or returning from injury are shaking up a number of team’s front sevens. For some it is an easy case of one player seeing a lot more time and another seeing their time gets taken away. For other teams we are seeing a shift in how much they use a 4-3 front vs. a 3-4 front in order to maximize the efficiency of their players. As always here is what changed in Week 3 and what to expect going forward.
Cardinals Pass Rushers
In Week 3, the Cardinals lost Lorenzo Alexander, Sam Acho and Alex Okafor for the season. This meant the Cardinals basically moved from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3, and a 3-3 in the nickel defense. On the defensive line, Matt Shaughnessy came in and played defensive end. Once both Alexander and Acho were out, Shaughnessy played 94% of snaps. John Abraham came in the other pass rush spot as a linebacker, and played in 85% of snaps. The Cardinals have promoted Dontay Moch from the practice squad and added Vic So’oto, but for the most part I would expect both Shaughnessy and Abraham playing a high number of snaps going forward.
