IDP Man Coverage – Targets: Week 13

Here at Pro Football Focus we chart every play of every NFL game, recording advanced statistics on exactly what a player does on every snap. Then as fantasy analysts we take that data and use it, along with our experience from years of playing fantasy football and watching games ourselves, to form the opinions that drive our advice and decisions. This series will take a deep look at how teams are using defensive backs against opposing offenses, and apply a fantasy spin to the cornerbacks.

As a cornerback it is not easy to accrue fantasy points for your owners. Generally speaking, the better you are at your job, the less opportunity you have to score points as your tight coverage on the receiver means the ball is not thrown in your direction. Of course, some wideouts will be targeted regardless due to their talent, and it is by identifying those players we can highlight the cornerbacks most likely to have play-making opportunites each week.

Below you can see a table which charts all wide receivers that have been targeted 80+ times so far this season. Then based on the available data, depth charts, schemes and injuries I have listed the cornerback that will face-off against them most often in this week’s slate of games. Sometimes this will be marginal as some teams keep their cornerbacks on one side of the field during a game so they only face the aforementioned player for 35-45% of snaps, other times a team will ask a player to man-up on a receiver (30+ snaps and 65%+ covering the same player). I have included the data collected on each cornerback’s coverage responsibility over the course of the season to suggest how likely they will be to shadow a player, as well as the number of interceptions thrown on passes to the named receiver, and also how productive a fantasy match-up the opposing team has been as a whole to the cornerback position.
