Once upon a time, before the NFL was infiltrated with mad scientists disguised as offensive coordinators, defenses were able to impose their will on even the best of offenses. And the best defenses typically featured a dynamic, ball hawking safety in center field.

Whether it was the silent but deadly Troy Polamalu patrolling the entire field, or Ed Reed playing the role of Waldo behind the menacing Ravens front seven, quarterbacks left the huddle living with the cold reality of being one minor mistake away from losing control of the game. Defensive coordinators that had a safety of elite caliber in their arsenal were able to confound quarterbacks and allow their playmakers to do exactly that.
