Free Agency Reactions: Day 9

2014 FA Reactions - Day 9The league eased back into the free-agent action on Monday, but with plenty of visits happening some new deals got done, though re-signings seemed to be the order of the day. We could now be looking at the last chance for overspending as the top free agents on the board are seeing options at their positions dwindle and teams are still feeling the pressure to land veteran solutions.

To see some ofour other Free Agent tool features and keep on top of the action, we’d recomend  with our Free Agent Tracker, our updating list of Top 75 free agents and the massively popular Deal Grader that offers an easy-to-follow comparison of free agent signings… and, of course, follow us on Twitter at: @PFF. For the early reactions from the first few days of free agency, you’ve just got to click: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 Day 6 | Day 7  Day 8

Check back in every hour or two for updates and, if you can’t wait but want more info, well then you should grab yourself a PFF Premium membership for $26.99 to get all the grades, stats and snap counts out there.

16.30: We’ve had a great time on the blog but that’s your lot for Free Agency 2014. The lack of news flow means you can still expect to see plenty of pieces from us in the upcoming weeks and months, looking back at the 2013 season and ahead to the 2014 one. So long.

14.30: RELEASE! Jim Wyatt reports that long term Titans kicker Rob Bironas has been given his walking papers. He missed four kicks last year and did nail two from over 50 so while he’s no spring chicken there will be teams getting in touch. Whether that sees him land a job as the go to guy or whether he’s just contingency for a younger kicker remains to be seen. It means the team will have another hole to fill going forward. He was our 23rd ranked field goal kicker and 22nd with kickoffs.

14.00: RE-SIGNING! The Jets, if you didn’t already know, are bringing back Willie Colon on a one-year, $2m deal. Good for them. Colon  has battled injuries in the past but saw plenty of action in 2013 as he managed 1060 snaps. His penalty count (12) is higher than anyone wants to see and his run blocking is a little inconsistent, but he’s top notch when it comes to pass protection. On a team with plenty of holes to address in the draft, bringing back Colon ensures that’s its one less at least for one more year.

11.45: RETIRED! CB Chris Carr has announced his retirement after nine years in the league. He played with the Saints in 2013, finishing at +0.4 on 148 snaps. He last saw significant work at cornerback in 2010 when he graded at +9.1 (including the playoffs) on 1167 snaps as a member of the Baltimore Ravens.

11.30: RE-SIGNING! It’s not the most glamorous one-year deal, but the Bears brought back CB Sherrick McManis, more than likely for his special teams work. He finished with +2.0 special teams grade in 2013, including a +1.5 on kickoffs to go with his nine total tackles. McManis only played 12 12 snaps on defense with a -1.0 grade to show for it.

09.00: SIGNING! The Chiefs went out and landed themselves one inside linebacker which meant they had no need for Akeem Jordan. Nevermind if you’re Jordan because you’ve latched on with the inside linebacker needy Redskins where he figures to compete for a starting job with Daryl Sharpton. Jordan featured in the Chiefs base defensive package and produced a fine effort against the run, with a +6.0 grade for his troubles on his 483 snaps. Rather impressively he proved to have a knack for finding ball carriers with a 12.5 run stop percentage that was fifth best of all inside linebackers. Let the battle commence between he and Sharpton.

05.00: There’s no better place to start Day 9 of free agency (or any day of free agency, for that matter) than with a glance at what your team has gained and lost so far. This set of links from our 2014 Free Agent Tracker page makes it easy:
