Fantasy Reaction: Greg Toler Signs With Indianapolis

The Colts signed Greg Toler to a three-year, $15 million contract. This move should help shore up their poorly ranked pass defense, as he’s certainly an upgrade over the likes of Cassius Vaughn and Josh Gordy.

Toler entered the league in 2009 and was the Cardinals fourth-round pick. He didn’t make too much of a splash, appearing in just 120 defensive snaps, but he did grade out at a +3.2 overall and +2.1 in pass coverage. He managed 11 tackles and a pick in his limited time on the field.

Few expected IDP production out of Toler in 2010, but he was a popular waiver pickup in most formats (especially cornerback-required leagues). In total, Toler played 909 defensive snaps and racked up 90 total tackles (82 solos), which equates to a 10 percent tackle frequency. He also made a play on the ball on 11.6 percent of his targets (2 INT/9 defended passes). Toler emerged into a solid cover corner overnight, allowing just 55 catches on 95 targets. He graded slightly below negative against the run but was among the top five in run-stop percentage, producing 16 stops in 346 run snaps. His future appeared to be bright.

In 2011, Toler saw his season end before it even began, as he tore his ACL in August. In 2012, Toler again battled injuries and appeared in just 308 defensive snaps. In his limited time, he did grade positively overall at +6.8 and in pass coverage at +8.8. He recorded a tackle on 8.8 percent of his snaps and managed to defend eight passes and pick off two, but his limited appearances capped his IDP value.

2013 Season

Toler should have no problem securing a starting role, which will help out a Colts defense that allowed over 230 YPG and 23 TDs. He's managed to produce a 9.6 percent tackle frequency over the last two seasons, so he has viable IDP value this season. Entering his fourth season, it’s safe to question his ability to stay healthy, however. Provided he does stay healthy, it’s reasonable to expect 900-plus snaps. In the pass-heavy NFL, he could easily see 85-plus balls thrown his way. Keep an eye on his health throughout the offseason, but he could provide CB2 numbers in CB-required IDP formats.
