Fantasy Impact: Dallas Cowboys Select Gavin Escobar

At 6’6” and 254 pounds, Gavin Escobar is a huge target for quarterbacks and is quite athletic for his size. Escobar is a former basketball star turned tight end, and it really shows in his ability to go up contested and come down with the ball. He has great, sure hands and will never use his body to catch the ball. While he might not be the fastest, his extremely long legs allow him to cover a ton of ground quickly with big strides.

As a big, talented and athletic pass-catcher, Escobar fits the mold of the new-era hybrid tight end that seem to be so en vogue at the moment. And that is fine, if that’s what your team needs. But if you’re looking for an all-around, old-fashioned tight end that can get physical and block on the line, you should definitely look elsewhere. Escobar is a huge liability as a blocker, which is likely the biggest thing hurting his draft stock.

Fantasy Impact

Dallas has certainly added a vertical threat. The Cowboys will now be able to utilize two tight-end sets with Escobar and Jason Witten. But because Witten (a valuable fantasy TE) is Tony Romo's favorite target, don't expect Escobar to put up huge numbers right off the bat. If you're looking toward the future in your dynasty league, Escobar is definitely a young keeper to build your franchise around. But if you're looking at things from a redraft standpoint, you might want to pass on Escobar for the 2013 season.
