Fantasy football strategy: Oddball draft approaches that just might work

Ever been sick of going with the flow? Are you one to try new adventures all the time, while your friends do the same boring things over and over?

This weekend is the biggest one all year for fantasy drafts, and we’ve had you covered here at PFF every step of the way, highlighting ways to find value, players to avoid, players to target, the whole kit-and-caboodle.

But there comes a point in all of this where you may stop and ask yourself, “What if I were to go completely unorthodox?” Your leaguemates wouldn’t know what to do. Heck, you may not even know what to do, but you’ll be having fun. This is an article for those not afraid to take the road less traveled.

Today, we’ll be discussing strategies that will definitely have your leaguemates guessing, and they might just be crazy enough to work. I went through and did mock drafts as well, just to give you an idea of the team you could end up with. You can try as well, using our Draft Master tool.

The “All-Suspension” Team

This strategy would work best if your league has a waiver wire by reverse order of standings, as we would rely on it to find value in the most important weeks — the first four weeks. The “All-Suspension” team would include Tom Brady, Le’Veon Bell and Josh Gordon, who are all being taken later than they typically would if they were playing all 16 games.

By taking this approach, it’s possible you lose your first three or four games, and that’s potentially okay. Through the first four weeks is typically when we find the breakout players, and ones that can be had on your waiver wire as long as you are at the bottom of your league.
