Get excited, Bears fans. Chicago appears set to sign QB Mike Glennon to what’s expected to be a three-year deal worth an average of $14.5 million. That figure places Glennon at the bottom rung of starting quarterbacks not still on rookie deals. In other words, he’s a bridge option, especially if the Bears select a quarterback in next month’s draft.
Glennon’s signing shows just how quarterback starved the NFL is right now. He’s thrown at total of 11 passes over the last two years. To be fair, Glennon did a respectable job filling in as a starter in his rookie year, positing 2,608 yards and 19 scores with nine picks in 13 games. But he actually graded out poorly for his performance and only completed 59.4 percent of his passes. He struggled under pressure, completing just 43.3 percent of his passes, and was one of the slowest quarterbacks to throw at 3.00 seconds.
That all being said, this isn’t the worst landing spot for Glennon. The Bears have one of the league’s ascending talents at running back in Jordan Howard, and their passing game proved quite friendly to Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley last season. The duo combined for seven 300-yard games out of 10 starts in which neither player was injured. The Bears are likely to move on from Alshon Jeffery, but they still have upside at receiver in Cameron Meredith and Kevin White. That’s by no means an endorsement of Glennon as a fantasy option, but him surfacing as a QB2 isn’t completely out of the question.
