A quick-hit look at the fantasy season and Week 1 in IDP

All the waiting is finally over. The NFL season is here. Let’s take a moment to savor the boundless optimism we all feel for both our fantasy teams, and our favorite franchises, before fate conspires against us and we do something reckless like trade a first-round pick for Sam Bradford …

Below is a quick-hit look at each team from an IDP fantasy perspective as the season gets going, and at the end a look at a couple good and bad Week 1 IDP situations based on home stat crews.

NFC Overview

Dallas Cowboys: In the NFC East there are some situations to be aware of at linebacker this season. In Dallas, MLB Rolando McClain will miss the first 10 weeks of the season, while oft-injured WLB Sean Lee continues to threaten to be an IDP force if, and it’s a big if, he can remain healthy for a whole season. Lee has the skillset to challenge to be the top linebacker in fantasy but has never managed to play 16 games in his five-year career. Despite that, he still remains a LB1 in our IDP rankings.

New York Giants: The Giants signed former Redskin Keenan Robinson to play as their middle linebacker this offseason, although he hasn’t locked down that job or three-down duties. It appears that he’s lost out in a camp battle with Kelvin Sheppard to man the middle for the G-Men, but neither inspire enough confidence to be a Week 1 starter for your fantasy team in any but the deepest leagues. The addition of Olivier Vernon on the defensive line alongside a Jason Pierre-Paul and Johnathan Hankins and Damon Harrison give the Giants arguable the strongest D-line in the NFL, and both Vernon and JPP can provide DL1 numbers this year. SS Landon Collins will be vying for a top-five fantasy season, while free agent CB Janoris Jenkins is a boom-or-bust option in cornerback required leagues thanks to his penchant for aggressive route-jumping.
