Every Tuesday I will be bringing you the NFL players who have somehow flown under the fantasy radar and are owned in far too few leagues given their production and/or ceiling. Injuries and byes are inevitable, too.
With the first game of the week a mere 48 hours away, here are some players that are on quite a few waiver wires out there that simply shouldn’t be.
Quarterback
Jake Locker, Tennessee Titans (Yahoo 7% owned; ESPN 2.4%) – 3% FAAB
He’s not going to light the fantasy world on fire, but I was very encouraged with what I saw in his return after a two week absence against a very stingy San Francisco 49ers defense. Locker (hip) looked healthy on his 41 pass attempts and gave the Titans a vertical passing game (four different players with a catch of at least 21 yards) that had been lacking of late. Chris Johnson and Delanie Walker caught touchdown passes while Kendall Wright and Nate Washington saw 22 targets, a well balanced attack that kept a very good 9er secondary off balance.
The Titans lack a true running game, making the 40-plus pass attempts something that could be a weekly occurrence. Tennessee has a very favorable November schedule (Rams, Jags, Colts, and Raiders), allowing Locker to serve as a reliable bye week replacement in most fantasy formats (16 teams have byes in November).
Case Keenum, Houston Texans (Yahoo 3% owned; ESPN 0.7%) – 1% FAAB
This is more of a “if you want a Texans quarterback, this is the guy I'd take” recommendation than it some one I want leading my fantasy squad. He is a rookie quarterback on a run oriented offense, but Keenum looked like an NFL quarterback in his first career start. The Texans hardly didn’t try to protect their youngster — his 12.0 aDOT led to15 completions for an impressive 271 yards — and with Arian Foster departing early, it is very possible that the Houston offense opens up a little bit in the coming weeks. Should that in fact happen, the Texans have the proper weapons in Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins to give Houston a strong aerial attack.
Keenum, who was no stranger to throwing the ball all over the yard in college, performed well against what has been an elite defense this season, so the fact that he should only improve and the quality of opponent will only decline provides me with confidence for the rookie in the coming weeks.
