“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.” – Sun Tzu
I feel like I went to sleep last night in a world where things made sense, and then I woke up this morning in an evil parallel universe that hates me.
Andy Dalton is the QB1. Andrew Luck is the QB29. Travis Benjamin is the WR9. Calvin Johnson is the WR25. Gary Barnidge, the 30-year-old blocking tight end, is the TE3. Devonta Freeman is the no. one player in all of fantasy. Last week, the no. two overall fantasy running back, Jamaal Charles, tore his ACL and is out for the year. In another sport, one of the Cubs, Royals, Mets, or Blue Jays will win the World Series. To top it all off, a reality star is leading the polls in the race to become the next President of the United States.
To be quite honest, I find your world revolting. It feels like I'm living in a Salvador Dali painting. There's a burning giraffe in my backyard and I'm just over here trying to decide if I should bench Peyton Manning for Blake Bortles. I don’t know how you do it, living in a nonsensical world of pure chaos, but now I’m living in it too, so it's I who has to adjust.
If looking back over your pre-draft rankings makes you suffer from intense anxiety and derealization, it's time for you to adjust as well. In fact, we're already a few weeks behind. The good thing is, as we're reminded by the author of The Art of War, times of chaos are also times of great opportunity. If you read my last article before the chaos of Week 5, hopefully, you profited too: Doug Martin was the no. one player in fantasy, Tyler Eifert was the no. two overall tight end, and Willie Snead returned 6.7X value on DraftKings.
This week, we'll be fading the chalk and try to profit from chaos by finding value where others do not.
Note: If you’re new to the article, we’re looking at players with ownership percentages projected to be around 5 percent and below. The number next to each player’s name is their ownership percentage from FanDuel’s $2 Thu NFL Snap. While a contrarian strategy is the author's preferred method for taking down DFS tournaments, it is not a necessary strategy for cash games.
