49ers among 3 best NFL team fits for Laremy Tunsil

The PFF analysis team recently put out its latest draft board for 2016, this time including the top 100 NFL prospects.

Where do the top prospects fit best? We identified three ideal team fits for each player in the top 10, based on scheme, need and where each prospect is likely to be selected.

Ole Miss left tackle Laremy Tunsil was mentioned as a possible No. 1 overall pick before the Rams-Titans trade, and he ranks No. 5 on the PFF draft board. This comes after grading out as one of the best tackles in college football in 2015 on a per-snap basis, excelling as a run-blocker and allowing just five pressures in pass protection (0 sacks, 0 hits, 5 hurries).

Let's take a look at three ideal NFL team fits for Tunsil:

San Diego Chargers: The Chargers ranked dead-last in team pass-blocking grade last season, and second-to-last in run-blocking grade. The return of left tackle King Dunlap from injury could help, as he earned positive grades prior to his limited 2015 campaign, but he’ll turn 31 this season, so it’s not as though his presence is an impediment to drafting Tunsil. Moreover, the rest of the line was a disaster outside of right tackle Joe Barksdale, so Tunsil’s arrival could really help.

Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens lost their second-highest-graded run-blocker in guard/tackle Keleche Osemele to the Raiders in free agency, and right tackle Ricky Wagner’s 44.4 grade (out of a possible 100) ranked 49th in the NFL last season, so Tunsil would certainly fill a need with the No. 6 overall pick. Additionally, left tackle Eugene Monroe, who will be 29 years old this season), has dealt with injuries and earned a negative overall grade in his two full seasons with Baltimore.

San Francisco 49ers: New head coach Chip Kelly was with the Eagles when they drafted an athletic tackle in Lane Johnson in 2013, and Tunsil would represent a similar choice at No. 7 overall. The Niners ranked 13th in pass-blocking grades in 2015 but just 30th in run-blocking grades, a deep fall from having ranked in the top-five of run-block grades each of the previous four seasons. Tunsil excelled in particular in the run game at Ole Miss last season, so he could potentially slot in right away at right tackle (a disaster area for the team in 2015) and eventually replace Joe Staley at left tackle (he’ll be 32 this season).
