PFF scouting report: Daniel Lasco, RB, Cal

at California Memorial Stadium on September 27, 2014 in Berkeley, California.

Below is the PFF draft profile for Cal's Daniel Lasco, which incorporates PFF’s college grades and scouting intel from our team of analysts. To see all of PFF’s 2016 scouting reports, click here.

Position fit: No. 2 running back

Stats to know:
• Played just 197 offensive snaps in 2015. Overall grade ranked 37th among draft-eligible RBs
• In 2014, his overall grade ranked tied for 18th among all RBs and tied for sixth among the 2016 draft class

What he does best:
• Has an impressive jump cut and is able to string together moves downfield
• Quick acceleration out of cuts and sufficient top speed to outrun pursuing defenders
• Often utilizes his free arm well for effective stiff arms and pushing defenders past when cutting back
• Above-average pass blocker. Allowed just three pressures on 154 snaps in pass protection over the last two years. Ranked in the top 10 in the nation with a 98.7 pass blocking efficiency in 2014

Biggest concerns:
• Total production was way down in 2015 due to missing time with injuries. Per snap/attempt production was generally only slightly lower depending on the area, but he still looked like a different player. Did he just have bad luck with injuries last year, or is there something more concerning?
• Can make defenders miss and break arm tackles, but he doesn’t gain many yards through final contact. Averaged 2.6 and 2.8 yards after contact over the past two seasons
• Dropped six of 42 catchable passes over the last two years

Bottom line: Lasco had an impressive 2014 campaign and was a highly productive runner. But injuries hindered him last season and he looked like a different player much of the time. Still, he finished the season well as the highest-graded offensive player in the Shrine Bowl and performed well at the NFL combine in February. He’s very athletic and has quick moves at the second level. He’s shown some ability as a receiver out of the backfield but drops have been an issue. If he continues to be as good of a pass blocker in the NFL, it might help him get some more playing time early.
