PFF Draft Board: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

PFF is putting together team-specific draft boards for all 32 teams, using our draft rankings and our evaluation of how each player fits in specific schemes.

Included are three ideal targets for each team with their first-, second- and third-round picks, along with the complete team-specific draft board including every player in PFF’s draft rankings.

Here is the entry for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

Round 1 (9 overall)

Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor

One of the best fits for the Tampa Bay is Coleman. After Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, the Bucs have very little at WR and with this being the last year in Jackson’s contract it’s time to look for his replacement. Coleman has the second-highest yards per route run in this year’s draft class at 3.97.

Shaq Lawson, ED, Clemson

Outside of Gerald McCoy no other Tampa Bay defender graded above +3.0 in pass rush. Lawson would give the Bucs an Edge defender they have been missing. Last season Lawson recorded 49 total pressures — 12th-best in this year’s class.

Chris Jones, DI, Mississippi State

Jones is another defensive lineman to add on a defense that has very few players of note on it. Jones scored the third-highest pass rushing productivity for DI at 12.1. Pairing him next to McCoy would give Tampa Bay a scary pass rush up the middle.

Round 2 (39 overall)

Austin Johnson, DI, Penn State

Johnson is another DI to add to Tampa Bay, however he is a vastly different player than Jones. Johnson finished with the third-highest grade against the run last season, but generated only 23 total pressures.

Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama

Last season, the offensive line only had two players grade in positive who took over 250 snaps — Ali Marpet and now departed Logan Mankins. Now is the time to start finding help for Jameis Winston in protection, where he can develop into the quarterback they drafted him to be.

Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Miss

Tampa Bay finished with the worst combined pass coverage grade of any team last year. Kalan Reed might come from a smaller school, however he has all the physical tools that teams look for in CB. Last year Reed finished the year with the third-highest coverage grade and only allowed a QB rating against of 58.0.

Round 3 (74 overall)

Von Bell, S, Ohio State

With Tampa Bay playing a lot of 2-high safety looks, Von Bell can mask some of deficiencies that cover 1/3 look wouldn’t allow. With the whole secondary struggling last season, any addition could be a major boost.

Nick VanHoose, CB, Northwestern

VanHoose fits best in a zone-heavy team like Tampa Bay, where he will be asked to play to his strength. VanHoose finished last season as our highest-graded corner in coverage.

Shon Coleman, OT, Aubrun

As a run blocker Coleman had the fifth-highest grade in this draft class, while he might be a work in progress as a pass blocker, he can still be an upgrade at either right or left tackle where Donovan Smith (-35.6) and Gosder Cherilus (-27.1) both struggled last season.

The Bucs may be angling to move down to 15 if the player the Titans want (ikely a tackle, it seems) is there at 9. At that point, there are a lot of directions they could go–DE, DT, CB, maybe WR. My personal choice would be corner Jackson.
