PFF draft board: Detroit Lions

PFF is putting together team-specific draft boards for all 32 franchises using our draft rankings and evaluation of how each player fits in specific schemes.

Included are three ideal targets for each team with their first-, second-, and third-round picks, along with a team-specific draft board (at the bottom of this article) that includes every player in PFF’s draft rankings.

Here is the entry for the Detroit Lions:

Round 1 (16th overall)

Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State

Conklin is our second-ranked tackle, so it’s definitely possible that he doesn’t make it this far. But if he does, the Lions shouldn’t hesitate to draft him. Conklin is an incredibly powerful run-blocker who can hold his own in pass protection. For a Lions team in desperate need of a tackle, Conklin is a fantastic fit.

William Jackson III, CB, Houston

The Lions already have a No. 1 corner in Darius Slay, but adding one that’s 6-foot tall and runs a 4.37 40-yard dash would be a great fit for their defense. Jackson is a physical corner with a ton of upside and plays an aggressive style that the Lions would definitely welcome to their defense.

Leonard Floyd, OLB, Georgia

Floyd was our highest-graded outside linebacker in all of college football last season, and was top-five in both pass-rush productivity and run-stop percentage. He’s a versatile player that can play both off-the-ball and on the edge for a Lions’ front seven that could use another playmaker.

Round 2 (46th overall)

Adolphus Washington, DT, Ohio State

The Lions could use another big interior defender who can get after the quarterback, and Washington fits that role well. While he’s not great in any one area, he was solid against the run and had the third-ranked pass-rush grade in the nation (+32.0) last season. He fits well as a three-technique in the Lions’ 4-3 defense.

Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Mississippi

Another option at corner, Reed could be a big-time contributor to the Lions’ pass defense. He can play both man and zone, and more importantly, he makes plays on the football. He was second in the nation last season with 14 pass breakups, and allowed just 48.3 percent of the targets he saw to be completed.

Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State

The Lions’ run-game improved measurably last year when they switched to a power-run scheme with Jim Bob Cooter, and if they’re looking for a tackle that fits that scheme, then Decker could be their man. He’s a very powerful down-the-line blocker and his pass-blocking, while needing work, has some positives.

Round 3 (95th overall)

Willie Henry, DT, Michigan

Henry is an explosive defensive tackle who would fit well as an interior pass-rusher in the Lions’ defense. Very few players in this class were able to fire off on the snap as quickly as Henry was last season. He needs some work in the run game, but would be effective as a situational pass-rusher right away.

Matt Skura, C, Duke

The Lions’ offensive line needs plenty of help, and Skura offers versatility that they could use. He can play center or guard and offers a powerful run-blocking skill-set. He can lock out big defensive tackles, as well as locate linebackers at the second level equally effectively.

Dean Lowry, DE, Northwestern

One of the more intriguing things for the Lions when it comes to Lowry is his versatility, as he lined up all over at Northwestern. He’s at his best when attacking straight through offensive linemen. He projects as more of an interior run defender, but has the ability to play outside the tackle, too.

I would love Conklin in the D! Idk about a DB or a LB in the 1st round for them though. They have to go OT or DT. My ideal pick for the lions would be Sheldon Rankins.
